This article will take you through the steps to register your own mobile device phone number for use on MechanicDesk. More information on the reasons why this is required and the timeline for full implementation is available on the ACMA website.
New SMS provider change over
To facilitate this, MechanicDesk is implementing a new SMS provider which will automate the majority of the registration process.
Before you begin the following steps, please confirm with MechanicDesk support that your workshop has been assigned to use the new SMS provider. Use the contact form in the Help tab in the MechanicDesk portal to contact us.
Once we reply back that your workshop is enabled on the new provider, then you can continue.
Registration process
To register your mobile device number you will need have the device available to receive the verification code, and be using the new UI to have access to the workflow for registration.
Only Admin role user accounts will see the button to access the new UI, and only Admin role user accounts can complete the rest of this process as it requires access to the backend settings available in the MechanicDesk portal.
Once you have changed over, navigate to Settings > Workshop Details > Miscellaneous in the MechanicDesk portal. The setting is labeled Workshop Name When Send SMS.
Click on the field to access the edit box, and enter in the required phone number. Country code is not required (you can start with '0'), if you do use country code, please note there is no space for the '+' (plus) symbol, and it is inferred and added automatically when you use the country code.
Example phone number displayed
Once you enter the phone number and save, a text will be sent to your mobile device with a verification code. Enter the code in the box displayed.
If the code is accepted, your full mobile device number should appear in the field now.
Test to confirm configuration
To test the setting and confirm that your SMS messaging from MechanicDesk is working with your device number, simply access any customer record (your own is ideal), choose the Send > Send SMS button, and enter in a mobile device number you have access to and a test message.
Check that the sender information from your received SMS corresponds with the mobile device number that you entered in the Settings.
Remember that replies go directly back to your mobile device, and are not recorded in Customers & Vehicles > Emails & SMS like outbound messages are.
